What is Ferrous Metal?
The term ‘ferrous’ refers to any metal compound containing iron. However, metals with only trace amounts of iron are not classed as ferrous. Because of the iron content, ferrous metals are usually magnetic, very strong and hard such as cast iron, light iron, steel and construction steel. However, these characteristics vary depending on the alloy elements the metal is made up of. Ferrous metal isn’t as in demand as non-ferrous and, as such, it usually has a smaller scrap value.
What is Non-Ferrous Metal?
On the other hand, non-ferrous metals do not contain iron such as aluminium and copper. These are usually more desirable as they are conductive, non-magnetic, and lighter in weight. Non-ferrous metals are also recognisable due to their malleability. This means that they can be reshaped and is why they are often used in commercial industries. There is a higher demand for ferrous metals and, as such, they usually fetch a higher scrap price. But this does depend on the alloy composition.
At Geo. E. Richardson, we recycle copper, brass, aluminium, lead, copper cables, stainless steel, nickel alloys, zinc, batteries. If you have unwanted scrap to recycle, call our team today. We can talk you through your options and arrange a collection of large items or a delivery slot at one of our depots for smaller items.
